Worked example

Example: 100 g of PLA at 24 per kg, printed in 6 h on a printer drawing 120 W on average, with electricity at 0.25 per kWh, costs 2.58: 2.40 of filament and 0.18 of electricity, in your currency.

How it is calculated

Material = grams ÷ 1,000 × price per kg. Energy = average power (W) × time (h) ÷ 1,000 × price per kWh. Cost = material + energy.

Limits and checks

This is not a full quote: machine wear, your time, failed prints, packaging and sales tax still need to be added before you set a selling price.

Frequently asked questions

Where do I find the filament weight and print time?

In your slicer (Cura, PrusaSlicer, Bambu Studio, OrcaSlicer…) after slicing: it shows filament used, in grams or meters, and the estimated time. If you only have meters, convert them to grams with the filament weight calculation.

Which power value should I enter?

The average power while printing, ideally measured with a plug-in power meter. The power supply's maximum rating often overstates real consumption.

Does electricity matter much?

For a typical filament print, material often outweighs electricity: in the example above, 2.40 versus 0.18. Long prints with a heated bed or an enclosure change the balance, so run the numbers with your own values.

Which currency does it use?

Whichever currency you type prices in. The calculator applies no conversion: the result is in the same currency as your inputs.

Are my values saved?

No. The calculation runs in your browser: the numbers you type are never sent or stored. As on the rest of the site, page visits and button clicks are measured, without the calculator values.
